Abstract
Objectives: Pain, swelling and trismus are common complications after surgical removal of
lower third molars. The objective of this study was to evaluate the analgesic
and antiinflammatory effects of low power laser
(Laser SmileTM, Biolase ®, San Clemente, USA) applied to the wound after surgical
removal of third molars included.
Patients and Methods: We performed a
prospective clinical trial, randomized, double-blind in 20 patients attending
the Oral Surgery Department of the Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona
for the surgical removal of two lower third molars bilaterally symme-trical. The application of low power laser was made
at random on one side to intervene. We used a 4 J/cm2 energy at a power of 0.5 W and
wavelength of 810 nm. On the control side was applied handpiece
intraorally, but the laser was not activated. We
evaluated the level of pain, trismus and the degree
of postoperative inflammation.
Results: The sample consisted of 11 women and
9 men, mean age of 23.35 years (18-37). The pain experienced in the first hours
after the surgical removal was less intense in the experimental group, although
no statistically significant difference (p = 0.258). The postoperative swelling
and trismus at 2 and 7 days were slightly higher in
the control side, however no statistically significant differences (p>
0.05).
Conclusions:
The use of low-power laser with the parameters used in this study, it has
beneficial effects in reducing pain, swelling and trismus.
