Abstract

Introduction: Er:YAG laser's good absorbtion in water define it as a better alternative for scalpel in some dental surgical procedures because of its excelent ablation, contouring and coagulating effect on soft tissue.

Aim: Presenting operculectomies procedures performed with Er:YAG laser in different clinical situations.

Material and method: Er:YAG laser (Fotona, FidelisIII) was used to perform 10 operculectomies in both contact and non contact mode, for different clinical situations. An average intensity of 260 mJ and frequency of 15 Hz in VLP mode were used for all treatments with some particularities, depending of local conditions.

Results: From all 10 cases only 4 needed local anesthesia, the rest was treated under topical anesthesia. In all cases the procedure was quick and no postoperative complications (hemorrhage, edema, infection or pain) was experienced. A complete healing was obtained after several days.

Conclusions: Er:YAG laser offers a very good support for dentist in operculectomy treatment in a very quick, painless and esthetic manner.
